Did you know that the United States has some of the toughest anti-drug laws in the world? Ironically, in spite of this, the country also has the highest level of illegal drug use in the world.
This depressing news comes from the World Health Organization (WHO) that surveyed legal and illegal drug use in 17 countries. The survey included the Netherlands and other countries with less stringent drug laws. Over 54,000 adults were interviewed in the Americas (Colombia, Mexico, and the United States), Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Ukraine), the Middle East and Africa (Israel, Lebanon, Nigeria, South Africa), Asia, (Japan, China) and Oceania (New Zealand).
People were interviewed about legalized drug use (like alcohol and tobacco) and illegal drug use (such as cocaine and marijuana). The WHO survey showed that many Americans use cocaine and marijuana. It added that Americans were four times more likely to reveal cocaine use and they were also the biggest number of marijuana users compared to New Zealanders. Ironically, the Netherlands, recognized for its liberal drug laws, emerged with fewer cocaine and marijuana users.
Lots of people are under the impression that cocaine usage is down and the drug is no longer a danger but that’s a false belief. Although the number of cocaine users in the United States has dropped since 1985, the figure is increasing again. In 1995 alone, there were 1.5 million American cocaine users and 533,000 first-time users in 1994. Currently, there are two million cocaine addicts and nearly half of all drug-related emergency room visits are the result of cocaine.
When it comes to heroin, there are 600,000 addicts. While injection is an efficient method of getting heroin users can snort or smoke the substance. These methods of intake have increased heroin consumption. The Office of National Drug Control Policy said that most heroin users are older, long-term drug abusers.
