Cocaine Effect – the Buzz to the Crash

Let’s face it, most of us started with a hit of cocaine to get the effect, the buzz. Little did we know the real long term effects on health and lifestyle.

The initial hit sends your brain into an upward spiral. With a sudden boost in blood pressure and a simultaneous restriction of blood vessels, it spikes the blood system. Cocaine also elevates the pleasure producing molecules, dopamine, serotonin, and noradrenaline. These combined fluctuations give the buzz.

With such spikes to the blood system elements, especially the heart and brain cells, there is always a great chance that a stroke or heart attack can occur. Not to mention that this also causes a deterioration of brain cells through lack of oxygen.

When the cocaine dissipates in the system, and the system levels out, the user has lost their balance of normality and the brain feels depraved. This is the dilemma for someone who can not control their desires, the mental battle begins. Often depression sets in after a high because the brain feels deprived of the pleasure elevation that it had felt. In time this will go away, but it is a struggle to fight it until it does.

The user will feel terrible when they are not high, because their dopamine levels have dropped down to normal. The brain has developed a tolerance and does not recognize normal and therefore does not feel right. The brain is calling for a high so it is telling the body that it is lacking, hence it feels low, depression. Because the cocaine works so powerfully on the brain, it makes it one of the hardest addictions to overcome.

When the user feels low and the brain is calling for a high and the user submits to the desire, the roller coaster feeling of addiction becomes a reality. You go up and you come down, you go up and you come down. High then low, then high then low, over and over again. It gets to a point of high then crash, then high then crash.

In the meantime lifestyles and personalities drastically deteriorate. Family and friends are overlooked in the desire for the next high, ever so hopeful that a crash does not happen – but it always does.

Editorial Comment: As you may know from time to time I add articles which I think offer good information that others can glean guidance from. And I do know that there are many who do realize they need help and ideas to get off cocaine. As illegal drug use grows in America if you are one of those who need that help, you may want to get the free eBook Cocaine Relief – First Step and start with it.

What Are The Popular Illegal Drugs In America?

by Erin Holladay

Did you know that the United States has some of the toughest anti-drug laws in the world? Ironically, in spite of this, the country also has the highest level of illegal drug use in the world.

This depressing news comes from the World Health Organization (WHO) that surveyed legal and illegal drug use in 17 countries. The survey included the Netherlands and other countries with less stringent drug laws. Over 54,000 adults were interviewed in the Americas (Colombia, Mexico, and the United States), Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Ukraine), the Middle East and Africa (Israel, Lebanon, Nigeria, South Africa), Asia, (Japan, China) and Oceania (New Zealand).

People were interviewed about legalized drug use (like alcohol and tobacco) and illegal drug use (such as cocaine and marijuana). The WHO survey showed that many Americans use cocaine and marijuana. It added that Americans were four times more likely to reveal cocaine use and they were also the biggest number of marijuana users compared to New Zealanders. Ironically, the Netherlands, recognized for its liberal drug laws, emerged with fewer cocaine and marijuana users.

Lots of people are under the impression that cocaine usage is down and the drug is no longer a danger but that’s a false belief. Although the number of cocaine users in the United States has dropped since 1985, the figure is increasing again. In 1995 alone, there were 1.5 million American cocaine users and 533,000 first-time users in 1994. Currently, there are two million cocaine addicts and nearly half of all drug-related emergency room visits are the result of cocaine.

When it comes to heroin, there are 600,000 addicts. While injection is an efficient method of getting heroin users can snort or smoke the substance. These methods of intake have increased heroin consumption. The Office of National Drug Control Policy said that most heroin users are older, long-term drug abusers.

Drug Treatment Centres – A Valid Therapy

by Beth Millington

It can be difficult to see a solution when dealing with drug addiction; whether directly or indirectly. However, there is help available and drug treatment centres are constantly striving to provide improved methods to overcome what is a bind for many an individual not to mention those around him. It is certainly beneficial to be treated in a reputable centre, however, and having criteria for one to fulfil is a useful method in achieving this.

The facilities are the first thing that is usually exposed to evaluation. Activities which should be expected are a recreational lounge, a library, a gym and a swimming pool.

The surrounding environment is another important factor when determining which treatment centre to opt for. An environment, for example, in the countryside can have a soothing effect on the patients who are there to recover from an addiction and where minimal distraction is a huge plus.

The staff also play a key role and they need to be qualified and perhaps, more importantly, available. There should be experience had by both staff and the counsellors and also authentication provided by a recognised body.

Treatment will only provide its full benefits if all parties are on the same page and show full cooperation with the treatment programme. The patients became addicted to drugs for a reason and their natural levels of self-esteem need to be ultimately restored, not just to the point before the addiction began but o the point where whatever caused them to turn to drugs in the first place. They should be treated with dignity and with the aim of giving them back their life. Once treatment is over and the patient is back at home, they should be refocused with renewed purpose and their experience firmly behind them.

Addiction Trends Of The Last 30 Years

by Catherine Cosgrove

By definition, an addiction is described as being abnormally tolerant or dependent on something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming. Addictions come in many forms, from substance abuse addiction to behavior addictions, all of which may require intervention or professional treatment to overcome. As addictions have changed and redeveloped over time, programs have had to progressively change and modify approaches as well. In fact, while addiction trends have changed in the last three decades with some becoming more problematic than others, more help is available for overcoming addiction than ever before.

Though alcohol dependency has been a constant addiction recognized for many years, in the mid-1970s, illicit drug use and addiction peaked to a point almost rivaling that of alcohol. Illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroine, and marijuana were the primary source of drug addictions until the 1990s. At this point, illicit drugs that were more cheaply made and acquired, like meth, became a growing trend.

Marijuana dependency and addiction is a source of interest in both the medical and political sectors today. As more states explore the legalization and government control of marijuana for medical purposes and even recreational use, the potential for marijuana use to peak and become as problematic as alcohol addiction is possible.

While dependency on illicit drugs continues to be a problem for some, prescription drug addiction has nearly overshadowed illicit drugs in the last decade. Narcotic pain relievers and stimulants top the list of prescription drug addictions. In 2001, reports indicated that nearly 87 percent of prescription drug addicts were white. Some reports also indicate prescription stimulates, such as those used to treat ADHD, are primarily abused by people under the age of 21. In addition to prescription drug addiction, over the counter (OTC) drug addiction has seen a rise in the last decade.

In addition to substance abuse, other addictions that are behavior oriented have seen rises and falls as well. Some behavior-based addictions that have existed for years have only recently become recognized as genuine addictions requiring intervention. For example, where gambling addictions were once unacknowledged, 12-step programs for gambling addicts are now as mainstream as AA. Similar addictions, including sex addiction, have also seen an increase in awareness. Certain addictions, like food addictions, have less social stigma but have come into the forefront as behavior addictions requiring modification nonetheless.

For many, an addiction may stem largely from habitual familiarity but many addictions are both psychological and physiological. Those who struggle with addiction are bound not only by the psychological habit but in many cases, a physical addiction. Substances that cause the body to respond to an absence, such as caffeine, nicotine, or an opiate drug, make overcoming addiction that much more difficult.

With an increase of studies pertaining to the psychological and physical dependencies created by addiction, programs to overcome addiction have improved as well. Programs to treat addiction were once barbaric in some sense, ignoring the psychological aspect of addiction. Today, programs that focus on the individual and each aspect of their addiction make it possible to overcome addiction once and for all. Through various support and treatment programs that address an individual’s addiction in both traditional and non-traditional methods, addiction recovery is becoming more successful.

Addictions of all varieties have seen some resurgence in different times but the core of addiction and the road to recovery remain the same. People struggling with addiction are often depressed and can see their life spiraling out of control but feel too alone or ashamed to ask for help. Oftentimes, denial is at the core of addiction, with those suffering from addiction unable to acknowledge their dependency. Those who are involved in an addict’s life also feel alone and afraid and may not know how to help.

Thankfully, as addiction at its core has remained virtually unchanged, the influx of information available through the Internet and the increase in public awareness and health education curriculum has improved the way people can find help. Additionally, this increase in information and awareness has improved the way recovery and treatment facilities are able to offer help. Treatment and recovery centers exist for nearly all types of addictions, in nearly every part of the country. Substance abuse hotlines and mental health benefits through insurance companies have also helped to facilitate addiction help. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, the first step to recovery is to ask for help.

Catherine Cosgrove is a representative of Heritage Home Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center. Heritage Home Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center offers a tranquil and therapeutic environment to begin your recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Our team has worked together in (http://www.sobriety.ca/) drug rehab centres for many years and will give you a personal, unique, and individualized approach to emotional healing and sobriety.

It was discovered that he had allegedly swallowed 2 kilograms (nearly 4.5 pounds) of cocaine to fund his election campaign. The Nigerian agents reported they had found 100 packages inside his body.

He said he was financially ruined after he lost the last election, so evidently he didn’t care if he was dead if one of the packages ruptured. Quite a big chance to take! Qualifies as dumb.

Addiction Treatment Centres – Aiding The Helpless

by Abby Crackworth

Until a relatively recent change of perception, treating drug addicts was considered to be a difficult task indeed. Seen as a nuisance, associated with crime and delinquency, they were looked down upon and cast aside by many in society. However, treatment centres have begun to make an impact upon addicts and have gradually turned around the perception that treatment for addiction is merely a superficial luxury for the self-indulgent.

There are a growing number of treatment centres that offer programmes designed to help the addict. Narconon is one such example. Treatment centres offer an integrated treatment solution for the addict. They have helped to pave the way for acceptance, not of the addiction or the addict’s behaviour stemming from a result of that addiction but of the person them self and hope that something can be done to help.

The aim of these programmes is not just for them to be effective but to reliable so that they can be consistently effective. This aim is being adhered to all the time with technological advancements being fitted into the very top treatment centres. And the latest medical equipment being installed. That’s not to say that technology alone is the answer. It isn’t. Other, more traditional, methods are also still being used. Methods such as counselling, recreation and medication.

Addiction treatment centres ensure that each addict is being cared for in such a way that helps that individual. The aim is not just to help to alleviate the effects of the symptoms but to see that the addiction is not continued once the treatment is over and that is done by addressing what caused the addiction in the first place.

There are treatment centres available which are design to aid a particular sector of the public. One such sector catered for in this way are gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people. Special arrangements can be made with a special environment and facility so that they feel that they are being properly cared for. These services are available each and every day and at all hours. So if any further information is required, it can be obtained no matter what time or day.

by Frank Julien

Although the goal of all drug rehab centers may be the same; the method by which they achieve it can be very different. There are variations in programs as well as different missions and methods. People staffed at various centers can be very different as well. Here are some key points that make one treatment center stand out from the rest.

Drug Programs: Many drug treatment centers will skirt around the success issue or at the very least they will be vague about the numbers. Success means the overall success rate. Many times it takes two or even three times through a program before total success is achieved, but it is achieved.

Staff: A caring and professional staff can make all of the difference in the world between drug rehab centers. Unfortunately, many drug rehab centers are staffed with inexperienced or indifferent people who are only there to collect a paycheck. Other drug rehab centers, however, have committed, caring people who have a sincere desire to help others. Word gets around fast, especially when it comes to how people are treated. They want to go where they are not only going to be treated, but respected.

Treatment: There are some drug rehab centers that only recognize and treat the physical aspect of drug addiction. Addiction, as well as alcoholism affects a person’s physical, mental and spiritual being. Therefore, all three must be treated in order for success to occur. This is called holistic healing and more and more people are opting for this type of treatment.

A good drug treatment center, such as (http://www.narconon.ca) Narconon Trois-Rivieres, will assess each person individually to determine what exactly the best course of action is. Not all treatment programs work for all people. There has to be some individual therapy sessions and programs geared toward each person. Sadly, some drug treatment centers have a “one size fits all” attitude when it comes to treatment. When this is the case, many people do not successfully finish the program and have no desire to return to it since it is not tailored to their individual needs.

Obviously, there are more than three things which go into the making of a successful drug treatment center, such as (http://www.narconon.ca) Narconon Trois-Rivieres, but these are some of the more important aspects. Inside each category there are even more sub categories that need to be addressed. A successful drug treatment center goes down the list making sure every need is met in the program. Before entering a drug treatment center, ask questions and a lot of them. Find out what methods the center uses and why.

Want to find out more about an effective (http://www.narconon.ca) drug rehab center? Visit Narconon Trois-Rivieres’ site and find out about their (http://www.narconon.ca/drug_rehab_program.htm) holistic rehab program.

Drug addiction treatment must help the individual stop using drugs, maintain a drug-free lifestyle, and achieve productive functioning in the family, at work, and in society. Addiction is typically a chronic disease, people cannot simply stop using drugs for a few days and be cured. Most patients require long-term or repeated are to achieve the ultimate goal of substance abuse and recovery of their lives. Drug addicted first undergo detoxification where in the person is made to stop using drugs abruptly. Due to this, he may suffer from some side-effects such as fever, shivering and so on. But, they can be controlled by using some medicines.

Once the process of detoxification is completed they will have medical and behavioral therapy. The counselor doing the therapy will come to know about the physical and mental stability of the person. During this process he will understand the reason for addiction. An individuals treatment and services plan must be assessed continually and modified as necessary to ensure that it meets his or her changing needs. Treatment does not need to be voluntary be effective. Drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously, otherwise it will lapses during treatment.

Receiving treatment at the drug rehabs is best done in a safe and stable place that is supportive and conducive to recovery. The person should not be allowed to blame his or her issues on other people or situations for their addiction to alcohol. Only when one can take full responsibility for their actions will they be able to accept change and decide to live a new life.
