Woman faces judge after daughter tests positive for cocaine

By Ben Watson – bio | email        MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A Memphis mother appeared in drug court Wednesday morning on charges she delivered a baby with cocaine in her system.

Ora Boler is charged with reckless endangerment. According to an affidavit of complaint, Boler is a known crack cocaine user.

The affidavit said that on November 14, Boler’s daughter was born at the Regional Medical Center with cocaine in her system. Boler has six children in all, and that are reports that her daughter is Boler’s fourth child that was born at the hospital and tested positive for cocaine.

During court proceedings, Judge Tim Dwyer arranged for Boler to undergo mental and physical screenings for a new drug court program for mothers who deliver babies that have cocaine in their system.

The program is aimed at rehabilitation. If Boler passes the screening, she will be enrolled in the program. For 18 months, she will receive intensive drug treatment, counseling and supervision.

Just how much treatment Boler receives will depend on what court officials find out when she goes through her screenings scheduled for Friday.

Since August, there have been six other mothers enrolled in the program.

If Boler is accepted into the program and completes it successfully, her charges could get dismissed. If she fails to complete the program, she will be back in court to face felony reckless endangerment charges and the jail time that goes with it.

Boler’s infant daughter is in state custody, but it is now clear where her other children are.

Court officials said there are no guarantees that mothers who complete the program will get their children back, but completing the program successfully could help.

The reality of cocaine is that the addiction is so strong that it overrides all common sense and evidently motherly instinct to protect the unborn. And even in some cases to protect their born children.  Cases even show up with children accidentally taking drugs left laying around by addicted parents.  Not just mothers, but fathers and sperm doners which are addicted lack the responsibility for their actions.

Cocaine addicts often show lack of responsibility not only towards others but towards themselves.  The lack of parental responsibility is one of the key symptoms of cocaine use, along with meeting regular responsibilities.

Cocaine Smuggler Caught Hiding It In Easter Eggs At Christmas

CNN reports that Esteban Galtes, 23, of Miami, Florida, was being held without bail being set. Galtes was allegedly caught trying to reenter the US from a week long trip to Columbia into Los Angeles International Airport with cocaine hidden in Easter egg candy. Galtes told the officers that the eggs were for his two children.

What Galtes failed to realize that he was using the wrong holiday wrapping for his smuggling activities. Bad move as he is now charged with importation of a controlled substance, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, authorities said.

Galtes’ luggage was allegedly found to conceal more than 14 pounds of cocaine during a search by customs officers, officials said. The cocaine has a street value of more than $100,000, authorities also said. Much of the cocaine was camouflaged as pastel-colored Easter egg candies, and the remainder of the cocaine was hidden under a cardboard false bottom of a paper shopping bag, authorities said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers sensed something was a little off with candy for the wrong holiday, a spokeswoman said.

“But cocaine camouflaged as Easter candy is one of the more unusual tactics we’ve come across. Obviously two days before Christmas, this defendant didn’t expect his trip would end with federal officers conducting an Easter egg hunt,” said Claude Arnold, special agent in charge of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations in Los Angeles.

Police Officer Facing 15 years for escorting cocaine run

Two former Laredo Texas police officers are facing years on prison for allegedly escorting cocaine. They were paid $1,000 each to escort 44-pound loads of what they thought was cocaine through rush-hour traffic.

An FBI agent in November 2008 posed as a drug dealer to work a deal with police officers Hale and Martinez, who pleaded guilty in February and testified against Hale.

The jury found Hale, 27, guilty of conspiracy with intent to distribute cocaine, which carries a sentence of 10 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $4 million. Jurors also convicted him of carrying a firearm during the crime, which carries a five-year-minimum prison term as well as a $250,000 fine.

Hale, who has been fired from the police force, remains free on $150,000 bail pending a Jan. 10 sentencing.

A sentencing date was not immediately available for Martinez, who has been free on $100,000 bail and faces 10 years to life in prison for conspiracy to traffic more than 11 pounds of cocaine.

Laredo Police Chief Carlos Maldonado said in a prepared statement. “The shameless acts of a few are not indicative of the men and women that proudly protect the community and continue to serve with integrity and courage,”

Are You Trading Health and Dignity for a Few Minutes of Cocaine High?

Are you trading your long term health, your dignity, and freedom for a short term high? What are the advantages of this? What good will it do you?

We only have one body and one mind with which to make it through life, and we can not afford to mess it up for a short term high. The chance of negative effects on the body is like playing Russian roulette with your body. Take cocaine as an example, the high is derived from a spike in blood pressure elevated heart rate, and from the constriction of blood vessels simultaneously. If there is any weakness is your system, something in your system will pop! Hence the strokes and heart attacks associated with cocaine use.

Cocaine works directly on the brain. Cocaine usage elevates the release of dopamine and the the brain feels depraved when those high levels are not felt. With cocaine working through the nerve cells of the brain, many different personalities develop, it is a stimulant and thus you become stimulated, and restlessness, irritability, and insomnia often develop. Your brain calls for the high again, and when you do it, it begins the highs and lows of cocaine use. The roller coaster addiction!

Not only is health a factor in cocaine addiction, the loss of dignity is a debilitating factor you have to overcome if you become addicted. Dignity is something gained over a period of time, and also something instantly lost when desires over ride common sense.

Your dignity can be regained, but only after getting clean and proving that you have the backbone and fortitude to do so. It is a proving process, you have to prove to family, friends and the world that you can master your situations. When you overcome an addiction, you will be a much stronger person because you can control your desires.

The short term high is definitely not worth the long term effects and the associated life trials which cocaine use can and will cause!

Hide your cocaine in a bank bag maybe, but don’t deposit it!

Police in Wethersfield Conn. report that a lady making a bank deposit through the drive up window inadvertantly left her stash of cocaine in her bank bag.  Naturally the bank called the police while the deposit was being made and she was arrested about 4:30 pm on Thursday August 12,2010.

The policeman said she admitted that the cocaine was hers and that she said it was left over from the weekend and she forgot about it.  She was not high a the time of arrest and was charged with possession and released without bail.

Well as least she’s not hooked to bad, if she forgot it from the weekend until Thursday.
